The following are links to sources for the writing activity portion of "Mining Documents for Inspiration," a literary salon I'm facilitating for James River Writers and the Poe Museum at Patrick Henry Pub on April 20. Come join the fun! Learn, write, share - and sip a tasty beverage.
Don't miss the 2014 Split this Rock Poetry Festival in DC on March 27 - 30. Until Feb. 1, full registration is just $85 (and only $45 for current students).
Featured poets include Natalie Diaz, Claudia Rankine, Tim Seibles, Eduardo Corral, and many other great poets. There are also oodles of workshops. I'll be teaching one at 2pm on Friday, March 28 about documentary poetry: Resisting Silence, Refusing to Fade: Documentary Poems as Witness. This interactive workshop will introduce participants to documentary poetry, a powerful approach that responds to - or incorporates excerpts from - primary source material (e.g. letters, photographs, diaries, news articles) in poetry. The resulting work often bears witness to events and experiences of oppressed, silenced, or marginalized people. The workshop will provide a multimedia introduction to this pulse within poetry, a group activity and discussion using a documentary poem and its source, and individual writing time. Check out the full program schedule for more details. Hope to see you there! |
